New Product Launch: Introducing Plastic-Free Packaging Kiln Dried Logs
Sustainability is the buzzword of the decade, but for many companies (including ours!) the term is much more than just a buzzword – it’s a promise and an action.
Over the past year, Lekto Woodfuels has been working towards reducing plastic use in our packaging, as ethical responsibility is at the very core of who we are and what we believe in. We are now ready to launch our Kiln Dried Logs in cardboard packaging, 100% plastic-free, so you can buy with peace of mind knowing that your kiln dried wood is not only good for your fireplace, but for the planet as well.
What’s wrong with plastic?
Plastic is present throughout our lives, and it’s so ubiquitous that we often tend to not even notice how much plastic packaging we use on a daily basis: plastic bottles, plastic bags, Styrofoam cups, microwave dishes, cosmetic containers, rubbish bags, films, takeaway clamshells… the list goes on and on.
The problem with plastic is that it won’t just accompany us throughout our lives, but it will also stay on our planet long after we’re gone. Most plastics used in everyday items are manufactured from petroleum, which cannot biodegrade due to a crucial (and essential) manufacturing process turning petroleum into an unnatural material, which organisms are unable to break down like they would with organic matter. Over time, plastic items deteriorate into microplastics, small plastic pieces measuring less than 5 millimeters long, bound to become part of our environment forever.
The consequences of our excessive plastic consumption can already be seen and felt today, especially when it comes to our precious marine ecosystem. It’s estimated that over 8 million metric tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year, leading to an increasing number of fish and birds dying from starvation and entanglement. But the plastic pollution problem is a human problem too: the toxic plastic particles ingested by the animals we consume are making our food more and more unsafe.
About our new plastic-free kiln dried logs
Our kiln dried logs now come in a 100% plastic-free cardboard box that’s easier to store and handle, making this product a more sustainable choice for the environment. But our efforts towards sustainability don’t stop with a reinvented packaging alone, as kiln dried logs have been proven to be the more sustainable choice to provide heating for your home and outdoor activities. With a moisture level below 20%, these logs are able to produce heat more efficiently than those with a higher moisture level, consuming less energy and avoiding the release of pollutant fumes that damage our environment and homes.
Each box weighs between 8-10kg (wood is a natural product, so it’s not always easy to determine the weight of each box!), but the box volume will always be 22 litres. These logs are perfect for both indoor and outdoor use – whether it’s log burners, open fire, pizza ovens, fire pits, BBQS, or anything else.
Changing our consumption habits for the health of the planet is no easy feat, but we believe that every little change in production will ultimately lead to a brighter future for us all, and we want to start working on that change today. Plastic nets or large plastic bulk bags are, without a doubt, cheaper options than cardboard boxes, but we want to do our part for the environment, and we know that going plastic-free is the way to go!
Our plastic-free Kiln Dried Logs are now available to purchase [here]. For a free piece of advice while you’re browsing, keep in mind that September is the best time to place your order to avoid higher fees over the winter. Note that we are working hard to be completely plastic-free with all of our packaging, however we still need to use plastic for our Hardwood Heat Logs and Night Briquettes in order to ensure that they don’t arrive to your doorstep damaged and broken. On the other hand, our Natural Firelighters, Kiln Dried Kindling, and now our Kiln Dried Logs are completely plastic-free. Going 100% plastic-free is still our ultimate goal!
Happy sustainable shopping – we can’t wait to see how you like them!
